Lighting Set Up's

There are four types of lighting set ups that I have learned about and they are:

  • The beauty dish
  • The soft box
  • The umbrella
  • Using to poly boards and reflecting light of the back.

The Beauty Dish
This is normally the high key lighting as if is directly in front of the model. If the aperture and the flash are both high than this may cause the image to be over exposed. It is always best to make sure the flash power is not too high as it will be a result of the image being overexposed.

The Soft Box
The soft box is more of the low key lighting. This is because the bulb is covered with the cloth so it gives it a softer light and the bulb is not directly facing the model. Even though the soft box is a low key lighting, the images can be over exposed if the flash power is too high. It is always best to check that the flash power.

The Umbrella
The umbrella is also known as high key as it has the light bouncing off the umbrella and it directly hits the models face. It can over expose the image if the flash power is too high and also can be used as soft lighting depending on where the lighting is placed and how high the flash power is.

Using two Poly Boards and Light Reflecting from the Back
This type of lighting is normally used to create a cat eye effect that is usually seen in model's eyes and this is a result of the two poly boards that are on either side of the camera. As the light is reflecting off a wall at the back this can make the surrounding of the model a little over exposed for example the outline of the model and this could happen if the flash is too high or the aperture on the camera settings.
